Newcastle can compete in top flight - Danny Guthrie

Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie believes his team are ready for Monday's Premier League opener against Manchester United.

The Magpies' sealed promotion back to the top flight as champions and despite the step up Guthrie is confident the squad can compete at Old Trafford.

"Everyone's ready and excited," Guthrie told BBC Newcastle.

"I think it's a good time to play them. The lads have concentrated on the tactics and everyone's fit."

However Guthrie added: "It's not all about the first day, we want to get off to a good start but whatever happens it's not the be all and end all."

The 23-year-old joined Newcastle from Liverpool in July 2008 for £2.5m, having previously spent time on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton.

Since his move to the North East the Shropshire-born player has operated in numerous positions across the midfield, but is determined now to stake his claim for a central role.

"Obviously I want to play in the centre," Guthrie added.

"I proved last year it's my best position. For a period I had to play out wide and do a job for the team which I am not going to complain about but I'm happier and a better player if I play in the middle.

"It's a big step up [to the Premier League] but if that doesn't excite you then you shouldn't be playing.

"I'm at a good age now and I want to put a marker down and become a top player.

"I feel I'm mature enough now to push on."

Guthrie made 43 appearances, scoring five goals for boss Chris Hughton as Newcastle lifted the Championship title last term.
