Win nothing on its own - Guthrie

Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie insists their win over Middlesbrough will be in vain if they do not beat Fulham on Saturday.

Monday's 3-1 win moved Newcastle out of the drop zone and put their destiny in their own hands with two games left.

Former Liverpool man Guthrie told BBC Newcastle: "We have to go out and perform against a good Fulham side.

"This win (over Middlesbrough) will mean nothing if we don't get something - we probably need to win again."

Guthrie believes the derby win shows the side has what it takes to stay up.

"We proved that we can do it under pressure so we'll be confident going into the game on Saturday," he said.

"It wasn't nice as all the teams around us played at the weekend and you're hoping they lose, but now it's in our hands, we control our own destiny so we have to go out against Fulham and win again."

On the future of manager Alan Shearer, Guthrie is adamant the former skipper should stay at the club.

"He's been brilliant since he came in, the same with Iain Dowie, it's great that he has his first win and I think I speak for everyone at the club when I say I hope he stays," he said.
