Newcastle United have confirmed that reserve-team coach Alan Thompson has left the club after a two-year stint at St James' Park.

Thompson, 36, was academy coach at the club during the 2008-09 season before being promoted to a reserve-team role.

"We can confirm that Alan Thompson has left his role with the club by mutual consent," a club statement read.

"The club would like to thank Alan for his commitment to player development and coaching at Newcastle."

Thompson added: "Newcastle United wish him every success in his future career."

As a player Thompson enjoyed a successful career, with his most productive spell coming in Scotland with Celtic.

Under Martin O'Neill's guidance the winger earned England recognition and helped the Bhoys to a Uefa Cup final in 2003.

Having began his career at home-town club Newcastle, Thompson went onto play for Bolton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Leeds and Hartlepool as well as his time with Celtic before retiring in 2008.
