Harewood happy at strike pairing

Newcastle 3-0 Swansea

Marlon Harewood believes that he and Danish striker Peter Lovenkrands are showing signs of a fruitful strike partnership for Newcastle United.

The duo both scored in Saturday's 3-0 win over Swansea, on-loan Aston Villa striker Harewood netting twice to end a run of seven games without a goal.

"Peter's a different player, gets into different positions and he makes me get into the box," he told BBC Newcastle.

"It was nice for him to get a goal for us, having played so well."

Former Nottingham Forest and West Ham United striker Harewood joined the Magpies on loan in September, having failed to find favour under Martin O'Neill at Villa Park.

He had made just one Premier League start in two seasons at Villa. But, although it has taken time for the 30-year-old Londoner to settle, he is now enjoying the chance of regular first team football at St James' Park.

"It's nice to be playing," he said. "When you're playing you get stronger and used to your team.

"You can go and score your goals, get into positions and help the team."

Harewood began his career at Forest, making his debut at the end of the club's Division One Championship winning season.

He made more than 200 appearances, scoring 55 goals before moving to West Ham United in November 2003.

At Upton Park, he remained a regular scorer, hitting 56 goals in 170 games.

That helped the Hammers to promotion and an FA Cup final appearance against Liverpool in 2006.

But, since moving to Villa for £4m in July 2007, his first-team opportunities have been limited.

And that has prompted two loan moves to the Championship, first with Wolves late last term and now with Newcastle, for whom he has now netted three goals in 10 games.
