Ferguson believes Newcastle fans need to lower their expectations |
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said he would be "astounded" if Newcastle sacked Sam Allardyce. The Magpies' 1-0 defeat by Wigan on Boxing Day has cast further uncertainty over boss Allardyce's future at St James' Park.
But Ferguson believes Newcastle need to give the ex-Bolton manager more time.
"I would be astounded if they got rid of Sam. Of all the managers they have had, he is capable of doing better than most," said Ferguson.
Newcastle, 11th in the table with 26 points from 19 games, face a momentous challenge when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Saturday.
Another defeat is certain to intensify the pressure on Allardyce but Ferguson believes Newcastle fans have unrealistically high expectations because of their five-goal thrashing of Manchester United in 1996.

"It seems to me as soon as Newcastle lose a game, the manager's career is threatened," he stated.
"The worst thing that happened to Newcastle was when they beat us 5-0. How many years ago was that?
"But since then, they seem to think they should win every game 5-0. I am not sure the Newcastle job is one you would want to take.
"I will certainly never understand why they got rid of Bobby Robson, given his experience and enthusiasm, plus the fact he is a Geordie."
Ferguson's sentiments were backed by Wigan manager and boyhood Newcastle fan Steve Bruce, whose side inflicted the Boxing Day defeat at the JJB Stadium.

"Being under pressure is part and parcel of the job now - but it is bordering on the ludicrous now," added Bruce.
"If you don't get an instant impact now, you can find yourself out of a job after eight or 10 games. What heart does that give anybody?
"The job Sam did at Bolton proves he is a good manager. Who could have done a better job than that? What has changed?"
