Nicky Butt joined Newcastle from Manchester United in 2004 |
Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt has penned a new contract keeping him at the club until the end of next season. The 31-year-old's current deal was due to expire in June and his one-year extension includes an option for a further year.
"Nicky has been magnificent for us this season when his experience has been invaluable," said boss Sam Allardyce.
Butt signed for the Magpies for 2.5m from Manchester United in 2004 and has made 93 appearances for the club.
He was sent on loan to Birmingham for the 2005-06 season, but has featured in 17 games this term for Newcastle.
"I only had six months left at the club and it is nice to get it sorted and just crack on with football now," he told the club's website.
"It gives me 18 months from now. The contract is something I am happy with,
and I hope we can go forward with the team and the squad we have got and start
challenging for things.
"It's potentially a massive club. We should be winning things. We have got a
great fan base and a great stadium and some great players - it is just a case of
tying it all together and kicking on.
"They have been trying to do that for a long time at this club, I know that.
But we have got potential here, and I want to be part of that for the future."
