Luque has started only 10 games for Newcastle |
Albert Luque's latest attempt to resurrect his Newcastle career lasted only 10 minutes as he limped out of a reserve match on Tuesday. The 9.5m Spanish striker was hoping to impress caretaker boss Glenn Roeder after failing to even make the bench in the Magpies' last three games.
But he picked up an ankle injury in the 3-0 defeat by Aston Villa.
Reserves boss Tommy Craig told the club website: "I feel for him. You could see his frustration at having to come off."
Craig said he substituted Luque as a precaution.
He added: "He started the game quite brightly but he took four studs down his ankle and it was a situation I wasn't prepared to gamble on.
"I was pleased to see he was frustrated about coming off. He had a willingness to stay on and help the team."
Luque joined the club last summer from Deportivo la Coruna but has failed to make an impact on Tyneside.
He suffered a hamstring injury in his second game for the club, which sidelined him for three months, and since returning to fitness he has been unable to hold down a first-team place.
