But Motherwell have failed to agree a deal with Leicester City's Rab Douglas after a trial spell and are now looking elsewhere for a new goalkeeper.

The 19-year-old Grabban has joined on loan until January.

And Hughes has signed a two-year contract, with Well having paid an undisclosed fee for the 24-year-old.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee said: "He has just got a medical this morning and will do the necessary signing. But, as far as we're concerned, the deal is going through.

Well's Scottish Premier League rivals, Hearts, had previously made an offer for Hughes, while Brighton this week also confirmed their interest.

Hughes had been transfer-listed in the summer, with Leicester having accepted a �50,000 offer from Hearts.

And Brighton assistant manager Dean White revealed that the midfielder had been determined to leave, despite the departure this week of manager Martin Allen.

Hughes had made exactly 100 league and cup appearances since joining Leicester from Rangers in January 2005.

Grabban has made 11 substitute appearances for Palace, scoring once.
