Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy demands focus

Morecambe manager Sammy McIlroy has held 'clear-the-air' talks with his players following their 4-0 defeat by Oxford United.

The 56-year-old was critical of the performance at the Kassam Stadium but is confident he will see an improvement against Chesterfield on Saturday.

"Last week I had no excuses for my players," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"It wasn't the Morecambe I know or the players I know. We've let people voice their opinions which has been good."

Morecambe are currently bottom of League Two having failed to win any of their opening five league games.

And McIlroy admits he is considering making a number of tactical and personnel changes for their next game, although believes other areas have contributed to their difficult run.

"We're certainly looking at both options but tactics is an easy way out," said the former Northern Ireland boss.

"Tactics aren't the reason why we've had a slow start to the season. It's more to do with mental attitude and concentration letting us down.

"I know I've got a better squad of players than I had last season, but things just haven't clicked at the moment."
