Morecambe have released defender Danny Adams from his contract with the League Two club.

The 34-year-old, whose deal was set to expire in the summer, helped the Shrimps win promotion to the Football League for the first time in 2007.

"Danny's now at the stage of his career in which he needs to be playing football," boss Sammy McIlroy told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"He's been a fantastic servant but I couldn't give him regular football."

Altrincham-born Adams joined Morecambe from Huddersfield in February 2007, having made 77 appearances for the Yorkshire club.

He started his career with Altrincham in 1997 before moving to Macclesfield for the first time three years later.

After making 168 appearances at Moss Rose he joined Stockport in 2004 before moving to Huddersfield 12 months later.

"I've managed Danny on numerous occasions and he's never let me down," said McIlroy.

"He was a great character and great to work with and has done a fantastic job for Morecambe.

"He has business interests at the moment so he'll probably go into non-league football now and do both jobs and whoever he plays for he'll do a great job."
