Middlesbrough are hopeful of securing a four-month loan deal for Hamburg midfielder Mickael Tavares in time for Saturday's trip to Barnsley.
Tavares, 27, joined Hamburg from Czech side Slavia Prague in January 2009, and spent last season on loan at Nurnberg.
But the Senegal international has been training with the second team after being told he had no future at Hamburg by boss Bastian Reinhardt.
The deal could continue beyond January if both parties are in agreement.
