Southgate is happy with the strikers he has (Getty Images)
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate says he will not be signing Newcastle United striker Alan Smith.
The 27-year-old, who opted for Tyneside rather than Teesside last summer, has been linked with a move to the Riverside Stadium.
Boro boss Gareth Southgate told BBC Tees: "I'm happy with the blend of the four strikers that we've already got.
"The one we haven't seen enough from is Mido. He's got a great challenge to get himself fully fit."
Southgate says he needs to strengthen the midfield of his squad after the departures of Fabio Rochemback and Gaizka Mendieta.
There is also some doubt over the futures of Gary O'Neil and George Boateng.
The Boro boss says he would be interested in signing Chelsea's Steve Sidwell if he became available but says he is aware that many clubs would be in the market for the former Reading man.
