Hendrie enjoyed two spells on loan at Stoke last season |
Middlesbrough are keeping tabs on Lee Hendrie, who is a free agent after his Aston Villa contract was not renewed. The midfielder, who won an England cap in 1998 and has been at Villa since 1994, spent much of last season on loan at Championship side Stoke.
But Hendrie, 30, is hoping to move to a top-flight team and Boro, the eighth club to make an inquiry, interest him.
He said: "I know boss Gareth Southgate well, it would be very tempting. I hope to get a deal done with someone soon."
Hendrie played with Southgate for six years from 1995 when the Boro boss was at Villa Park.
In total, Hendrie made more than 300 appearances for Villa, scoring 32 goals, and he was a hit at Stoke, where he enjoyed two spells last term.
Overall he played 28 games for the Potters and scored three goals.
