Defender Paul Mayo has joined Blue Square Premier side Mansfield Town after being released from his Notts County contract by mutual consent.
The 27-year-old has agreed a deal at Field Mill until the end of the season.
Mayo joined the Magpies in the summer of 2007 but has not figured in boss Ian McParland's first team since November.
He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "[Mansfield's] a decent club that's not been as high as it has been but I'm sure it'll go back to that status."
Mayo added: "It was either sit at Notts County for three months, maybe play a couple of games, or come to Mansfield, play and be in the shop window to try and sort something out for next year."
McParland told the club website: "With Jamie Clapham signing a new contract to the end of next season, Paul realised his chances would be limited.
He added: "He has chosen to make a fresh start and we wish him every success."
Mayo, who is Mansfield's third signing of the week, made 48 appearances for the Magpies.
