Skipper Buxton leaves Mansfield

Jake Buxton
Buxton made his debut at the age of 17

Mansfield Town captain Jake Buxton has left the club following their relegation from the Football League.

The Stags agreed to release the 23-year-old after 10 years at Field Mill so he can look for another club in the Football League.

"I am very sad to leave after being here from the age of 13," Buxton said. "The club have agreed to let me go and I thank them for that."

Youth team product Buxton made 174 appearances for the club.

He made skipper at the age of 21 and has been a regular since the start of the 2004/2005 season.

Buxton was out of contract this summer but Mansfield would have been entitled to a fee as he is under the age 24.

New Stags chairman Andy Perry added: "This decision has been reached amicably. We would like to thank Jake for his efforts and wish him all the best for the future."
