McNiven has received support from Millwall's Neil Harris

Mansfield's Scott McNiven has been diagnosed with testicular cancer after receiving the results of a biopsy.

"The news could have been better but it could have been worse," the 26-year-old defender told Mansfield's website.

"The results showed I had the milder of two forms of cancer, so I will need to undergo a course of chemotherapy.

"I will be visiting a specialist later in the week to see where we go from here, but I hope to get back to training as soon as possible."

He added: "The support I have received has been fantastic, with everybody wishing me all the best.

"I got a phone call from Neil Harris at Millwall [who recovered from the disease three years ago], who offered me an ear to bend.

"I asked him lots of questions, which he answered truthfully, which has given me such a lift."
