Rio expects red-hot return
Rio Ferdinand
Ferdinand's left Leeds for Man Utd in the summer
Rio Ferdinand has said that he is expecting a hostile reception when he returns to Leeds with his new club Manchester United on Saturday.

But the England defender - who left Elland Road for Old Trafford in the summer - is adamant there will be no bad blood between him and Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale if they meet.

Ridsdale has aimed several verbal volleys at Ferdinand following his 30m move, even suggesting he was merely bought as cover while Jonathan Woodgate was out of action.

Remember this is just football - it is not a war, it is not a life or death situation
Rio Ferdinand

"If I see Peter Ridsdale I'll be happy to shake hands with him," Ferdinand told the Sun newspaper.

"I don't see any point in either of us holding grudges. I've no axe to grind.

"I can understand he was disappointed I wanted to join Manchester United and he wished to make his feelings known.

"But there are two sides to every story. I've had my say as well and it's time to move on.

"All that really matters to me now is we get the three points, especially after the disappointment of losing to Bolton at home."

Ferdinand realises that his 30m transfer to Leeds' biggest rivals will inevitably result in a barracking from the home fans.

But Leeds boss Terry Venables has asked fans to get behind his team instead of targeting Ferdinand.

"My message to the Leeds supporters is to get behind the team," said Venables.

Venables has told fans to get behind the Leeds team

"Rio is not with us any longer. He is at Manchester United, so lets get on with our lives. Save your energy and support the team.

"We don't want any aggro. We just want a good football match."

Ferdinand added: "I can understand Leeds fans must be upset with me and they'll want to scream and shout at me when I go back.

"They pay their money to get into the stadium and let their opinion be heard. I accept that.

"Obviously, in an ideal world you would like them to give you a good reception and hope they remember the good times we had together.

"But I am not naive enough to think that is going to happen because I will be playing for Manchester United.

"And I will be doing my utmost to make sure Manchester United get the result the players and our fans want.

"Remember this is just football. It is not a war. It is not a life or death situation."
