Beckham fears axe
Manchester United midfielder David Beckham
Beckham knows he must improve
David Beckham has said that he must make a strong start to the season if he is to feature regularly for Manchester United.

United failed to win a trophy last term and finished third in the league - their lowest ever Premiership finish.

And the England captain, who is nearing full fitness after suffering a broken metatarsal in April, knows manager Sir Alex Ferguson will not tolerate any mediocre performances this campaign.

"Each year you have to take your performances to another level," said Beckham.

Last year was a big disappointment and we are trying to forget what happened
David Beckham

"Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and if you don't raise the bar every season you don't get into the team.

Beckham was rested by Ferguson last season after excelling during England's World Cup qualifying campaign.

And the midfielder failed to hit top form during the World Cup in Korea and Japan while still recovering from his broken foot.

But Beckham is determined to begin the season with an impressive display when United play Hungarian team Zalaegerszeg in a Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.

He added: "Last year was a big disappointment and we are trying to forget what happened but the need to play this match is a gentle reminder and it is up to us to put it right."
