| Friday, 2 August, 2002, 22:26 GMT 23:26 UK Ajax too strong for Man Utd ![]() Ferdinand looked assured at the back for United Ajax 2-1 Manchester United Manchester United looked rusty as they slipped to defeat at the hands of Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA, but there were some positive signs for manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Record signing Rio Ferdinand looked composed for an hour before being replaced, while David Beckham showed no ill effects of the foot problem that plagued him during the World Cup. Roy Keane also showed his summer troubles with Ireland have not diminished his hunger to play for United with a typically battling display.
But a fluent Ajax side got goals from Victor Sikora and Zlatan to send United to defeat in their opening game of the four-team tournament. Paul Scholes grabbed a goal for United late on but it proved to be a consolation. Scholes had earlier been the victim of a vicious tackle from behind by Romanian central defender Cristian Chivu, one of a number of crunching challenges from the Ajax side. "Ajax had more aggression about the game than us," said Ferguson. "Chivu was just playing his natural game and that approach doesn't concern me too much, but it's not the way we normally look upon these games. "They were sharper than us in the tackle but we will improve and get the rhythm back into our game." Sikora and Andy van der Meyde were a constant threat to the United defence. The Red Devils' goalscoring opportunities were restricted to a wasted chance from Diego Forlan and a Ryan Giggs header that went wide.
Sikora, who turned down a summer move to Fulham, opened the scoring in the first half. He reacted quickly and volleyed home from close range after Tomas Galasek's free-kick had been deflected into his path by Ruud van Nistelrooy. Zlatan scored with 15 minutes left on the clock when he latched onto a through ball and easily beat Fabien Barthez. Almost immediately Scholes, who had come on as a half-time substitute, pulled a goal back when he volleyed home a Giggs cross. Keane was close to a late equaliser but his effort hit the side netting and Ajax held on for the win that sets up a match with Barcelona. Ferguson was not too disappointed to have seen his side come off second best. "The bonus for me is that I got my England players back and they all came through without a problem," added Ferguson. "Rio Ferdinand looked assured at the back. He read the game well and I'm happy with him. It's always nice to get that first game out of the way." United will look for an improved performance when they face Italian side Parma on Sunday. But they are likely to be without keeper Fabien Barthez who limped out of the Ajax clash late on with a thigh injury. |
