Sir Alex Ferguson needs extra cover at left-back following Denis Irwin's departure to Wolves. And the Rennes defender, who earned rave reviews for his recent European Under-21 Championship displays with France, is keen to make the switch to Old Trafford. "Manchester United are interested in Julien and have made enquiries," Escude's agent Axel Lablatiniere told BBC Sport Online. "There has been no concrete offer made yet, but they are keen on the player. "He caught the eye of several clubs after impressing in the European Under-21 Championship. "Leeds have also expressed an interest in Julien but again no firm offer has been received. "Julien would really like to join United because they are one of the best clubs in Europe and it is a move that every young player wants."
Should United swoop for Escude, it could signal the end of Phil Neville's United career. The England international has already talked of leaving United in search of regular first-team action after falling behind Mikael Silvestre in the pecking order. Ferguson is also reportedly ready to hijack Arsenal's attempt to land Uruguayan goalkeeper Fabian Carini. Arsene Wenger is believed to be lining up a loan move for Carini, who is third-choice keeper at Serie A Juventus. But the United manager may use the presence of international team-mate Diego Forlan to tempt Carini to Old Trafford. |
