Evans is going nowhere - Hughes

Mark Hughes
Hughes has warded off interest in his young countryman

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is determined to keep Welsh international Ched Evans at Eastlands this season.

The striker, 19, signed a new three-year deal on Thursday before playing in the 2-0 win over EB Streymur.

Hughes told BBC Radio Manchester: "He's been excellent in pre-season and we're delighted we've secured him.

"I think I'm going to frustrate quite a lot of teams at [Championship] level because he won't be going anywhere in this window."

He continued: "[His ability] is demonstrated by the amount of phone calls I've had from Championship teams trying to get him out on loan."

Hughes also praised the performance of Brazilian striker Jo in the Uefa Cup qualifier in the Faroe Islands on Thursday. The club's record signing played 74 minutes on his debut for the club, before making way for Evans.

Hughes said: "I thought he showed great awareness of people around him, good link-up play and once he gets to know the players and the way we want to play he's going to be a big asset for us."

City now take a two goal cushion into the second leg of the first qualifying round tie on Thursday, 31 July, which will be played at Barnsley's Oakwell stadium.
