Davies ton inspires Pears display

PRO40 DIVISION ONE, Old Trafford:
Worcestershire 189-5 (25 overs) beat Lancashire 84 (17.2 overs) by 105 runs

Wicketkeeper Steven Davies hit the first one-day century of his career as Worcestershire cruised to a 105-run victory at Old Trafford.

Lancashire captain Glen Chapple won the toss and chose to field in a match reduced to 25 overs each.

Davis hit an unbeaten 103 off 83 balls with 12 fours and three sixes as the visitors made 189-5.

Gareth Batty claimed three wickets for two runs from three overs as the home side were all out for 84.

Tom Smith was the pick of the Lancashire bowlers and finished with 2-27 from his five overs, including the prize wicket of Graeme Hick, who was brilliantly caught by Francois du Plessis at long off for three.

Ben Smith chipped in with a run-a-ball 15 while in-form Stephen Moore recorded 12 from 15 balls.

Lancashire got off to the worst possible start when Lou Vincent holed out to Matt Mason in the first over for just one run.

Paul Horton cracked two quick boundaries but was bowled by Gareth Andrew for 12. Mal Loye, Gareth Cross, and Du Plessis all departed quickly as the home side slumped from 22-1 to 32-5.

Chapple hit a quickfire 23 from 13 balls but he could not stop his side falling far below the target.
