Manchester City midfielder Claudio Reyna faces three weeks on the sidelines after damaging both his knee and ankle. The 32-year-old limped off during Saturday's defeat at Arsenal after injuring both joints in one challenge.
"Claudio had a scan and it looks like it could be a few weeks," City boss Stuart Pearce told the club website.
"We will get the full prognosis later but he is fortunate we took him off as soon as he did it."
It is another frustration for Reyna, who spent most of the early part of this year struggling with a persistent thigh problem.
The USA international joins long-term injury victims Trevor Sinclair and Richard Dunne on the sidelines.
However, City have reportedly held preliminary discussions with Reyna over a new contract.
Having secured most of the younger members of his squad on longer term deals, Pearce is now targetting the more experienced men, with Reyna high on the list.
Although negotiations have yet to start in earnest, the City boss is keen to ensure Reyna stays beyond the end of his current three-year deal, which runs out in the summer.
Pearce will be boosted by the return of left-back Ben Thatcher and strikers Robbie Fowler and Bradley Wright-Phillips in time for Monday's game against Aston Villa.
