Pennant joined Liverpool from Birmingham City in 2006
Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has said it was good to get a starting place against Crewe in the Carling Cup on Tuesday.
It was the 25-year-old's first appearance for the side this season and he admitted he had to perform.
"If you get a chance then you've got to make the most of it," said Pennant.
"No matter who you're playing it's going to be hard. When teams come to Anfield it's their cup final but I had to go out there an show what I can do."
After playing 24 games for the club last season, Pennant was surprised his first start of the season had taken so long and it been a tough time waiting for his opportunity.
"It's been very frustrating knowing that you've been playing such a big part in the team and all of a sudden you're in the shadows and not involved at all," the former Arsenal man continued.
"It's been frustrating but that's the manager's choice, I've just got to get on with it.
"It was just nice to play a game at Anfield, whether it be the Carling Cup or any game, it was good to get the run out."
