Lincoln City's youngsters were beaten 2-1 after extra-time by Birmingham City in the third round of the FA Youth Cup at Solihull Moors' Damson Park ground.
The Imps, playing in the third round of the competition for the first time in almost 30 years, went behind to an 18th-minute penalty from Jake Jervis.
Kern Miller equalised after 73 minutes to take the game into extra-time.
Andy Hutchinson's chip struck the bar before Birmingham's Luke Hobbins netted the 102nd-minute winner.
The defeat dashed Lincoln's hopes of a first-ever appearance in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup.
But head of youth Tom Spall told the club's website: "I'm very proud of the lads and we were minutes away from making history.
"The lads looked dead on their feet but they kept going, they still thought we could get back into the game but we just ran out of time.
"But overall it was a fantastic performance and I've nothing but praise for them."
