Ling led Leyton Orient to an opening-day win over Hereford
Leyton Orient manager Martin Ling says he will spend the money generated from Nicky Shorey's transfer wisely.
Orient were entitled to 15% of the fee, believed to be 3.5m, for Shorey's move from Reading to Aston Villa.
Ling told BBC London 94.9: "The 31 August is important to us. The money will be spent wisely. It doesn't turn us into millionaires overnight.
"But it does free up a little bit of cash for now and also a little bit of cash for January, which is good."
He continued: "That's where I felt we failed last year when we couldn't top up the squad after a perfect start.
"It's perfect for us, we've been waiting an awful long time for Nicky's money and it's just come to fruition now after eight and a half years of patient waiting and it will be spent wisely.
I don't want to turn around to myself at the end of it and say I could have spent it better in another area or on a better player
Leyton Orient boss Martin Ling
"If you've waited that long for something you make sure you spend it right."
Last week Ling stated that he was most interested in recruiting a wide left player, and although he says that is still a priority he will choose his latest signing carefully.
"I'm starting to have a re-think a little bit. I still think we want a wide-left player. By the end of August I'll definitely know what that position will be.
"I will get it right, I will spend it wisely. I want to make sure I get it right, I don't want to turn around to myself at the end of it and say I could have spent it better in another area or on a better player."
