Leicester City have signed Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on loan until January.

The former Liverpool keeper, who has won one England cap, started the season as first choice at Wigan but has since lost his place to Ali Al Habsi.

"I'm grateful to have the chance to come and compete for a place. I'll train hard and hopefully I'll get the nod," the 29-year-old said.

"All my family are Leicester fans and I am proud to play here."

The Barwell-born keeper, who looked set to join the Foxes last week only for the move to be postponed because of a virus, added: "I've not been guaranteed anything. I know I have to work hard to get the nod and, if I do, I have to perform well to keep my place.

Kirkland was first called into the England squad while current Foxes boss Sven-Goran Eriksson was in charge of the national team.

But the former Coventry trainee's only international appearance came under the Swede's successor, Steve McClaren, as a half-time substitute in the 4-0 win over Greece in 2006.
