The 29-year-old international began his career at Manchester United where he made eight appearances before moving on loan to Nottingham Forest.
United manager Simon Grayson told the club's website he will also be looking at an unnamed French Player.
Grayson said: "We've got a couple of lads on trial and as ever we'll take a look at them over the next few days."
Meanwhile midfielder Jonny Howson has been called up to the England U21 squad for the match against Italy in Empoli.
Grayson added:"I'm delighted for Jonny , he's been terrific for us this season. He fully deserves his call and it will be a great experience for him. He's a great professional, a real hard worker and he's a real talent."
Howson, aged 22, is the first United player to receive a call up since Fabian Delph in 2008.
