Kewell has been the centre of much transfer speculation |
Leeds manager Peter Reid has pledged to hold on to Harry Kewell. The Australian international has been linked with a host of Premiership clubs since the turn of the year.
And Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly primed to launch an official bid for the player as he focuses on next season's Champions League and Premiership campaigns.
But Reid is determined to use Kewell as a lynchpin for a Leeds recovery next season.
"Harry is in discussions about a new contract," said Reid. "We don't have to sell him and I'd love him to stay.
"I have told him what I think and what my hopes are for the club. We will not be forcing any player out."
Kewell has just one year left on his current contract and has also been linked with possible switches to Arsenal and Liverpool.
He has so far stalled on signing a new deal at Elland Road.
Despite Reid's ambition to hold on to the 24-year-old, he revealed he would not stand in the way of the player if he requested a move elsewhere.
"If anyone leaves, it will be of their own choice," Reid told the Mail on Sunday newspaper.
"I don't want to stand in the way of anybody who wants to go because nothing less than 100% commitment is essential."
