Kewell is stalling on signing a Leeds deal |
Liverpool may switch their transfer attentions to Leeds United's Harry Kewell if they are priced out of a move for Blackburn Rovers winger Damien Duff.
Boss Gerard Houllier is determined to add width and flair to his squad and has made Republic of Ireland star Duff a prime summer transfer target.
But Blackburn are ready to slap a 15m price tag on Duff - which may force Liverpool into a cheaper deal for Kewell.
Kewell has yet to agree a new contract with Leeds, and with only 12 months left on his current deal the cash-strapped Elland Road club will sell if he does not agree terms.
Leeds are aware that Kewell could leave on a Bosman free transfer next summer, and do not want a repeat of the Lee Bowyer fiasco.
Bowyer turned down a 9m move to Liverpool and was then virtually given away to West Ham United after his Leeds career turned sour.
Kewell would be available for around 6m, a price tag which has also attracted attention from Manchester United.
Liverpool boss Houllier wants to add new faces to his squad, with Fulham defender Steve Finnan scheduled to arrive in a 4m deal.
And with Liverpool also looking to strengthen in midfield and attack, Kewell is an attractive cut-price alternative if Blackburn refuse to lower their price for Duff.
