Former Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Kyle Letheren has won a contract with Kilmarnock after a trial with the Scottish Premier League club.

The 22-year-old has signed until the end of the season.

Letheren almost joined Motherwell in April as cover for on-loan Everton goalkeeper John Ruddy, but the emergency loan requested was rejected.

Now he will provide back-up for Cameron Bell as veteran Alan Combe is recovering from injury.

Letheren, who represented Wales at schoolboy level and has one Under-21 international cap, began his career with Swansea City.

His one senior appearance came as a substitute during a three-year spell with Barnsley.

After his release last summer, he joined Plymouth Argyle, also as short-term cover.

Letheren, the son of former Leeds United goalkeeper Glan, also had spells on loan to Newport County and Doncaster Rovers.

He was one of several players on trial with Kilmarnock ahead of the start of the Scottish Premier League season on Saturday.

Chelsea left back Ben Gordon signed on a short-term loan, while winger David Mendes Da Silva was given a two-year deal after his release by CSKA Sofia.

Among those still hoping to win a contract is forward James Dayton, a 21-year-old who joined the Glenn Hoddle Academy after being released by Crystal Palace last summer.

Dayton, who had loan spells with Yeovil Town and Crawley Town before leaving Palace, can play on the wing, as an attacking midfielder or as a striker.
