Burchill given Kilmarnock chance

Kilmarnock have agreed a deal to sign former Celtic striker Mark Burchill until the end of the year.

Burchill was a target of Killie last summer prior to his move to Rotherham United from Dunfermline Athletic.

But the 28-year-old had his contract terminated by Rotherham after scoring five times in 28 appearances.

Killie manager Jim Jefferies said: "We hope to sign Mark. I think he had a year left on his deal at Rotherham, but he's happy to join us until January."

Burchill started just 10 times in his season with League Two outfit Rotherham, who he joined after rejecting a new contract with Dunfermline, with whom he spent three seasons.

The striker, who began his career with Celtic before a £900,000 transfer to Portsmouth, was also previously with Hearts.

He also had loan spells with Birmingham, Ipswich, Dundee, Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday.

Jefferies is looking for cover with two of his strikers struggling with injury ahead of the start of the new season.

"Kevin Kyle has tweaked a muscle and might miss the next couple of weeks," said the Killie manager. "But we hope he'll be ready for the start of the season."

Kyle joined Kilmarnock in January and his excellent form helped steer the club clear of relegation trouble.

Meanwhile, fellow striker Allan Russell will be out of action until the autumn.
