Kidderminster Harriers have decided on the man they want to succeed Mark Yates as manager at Aggborough.
Harriers had more than 50 applicants for the job after Yates and assistant Neil Howarth joined Cheltenham Town.
Chairman Barry Norgrove told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "We have our number one we think we would like.
"We are getting in touch with him later today (Wednesday). Hopefully we can start talks to discuss wages, and the budget he will have to spend."
Jim Harvey remains the favourite for the job, after resigning from Chester City on Monday.
Norgrove added: "We are hoping we can have something in place for the Crawley game on 23 January."
"We had over 50 on the list. The bigger names we were a bit worried about, as they may not have the experience at the non-league level."
