Mark Yates took the Harriers to Wembley in the FA Trophy in 2007
Kidderminster Harriers made it into the second round of the FA Trophy beating Burscough 3-2, but manager Mark Yates still blasted his team's display.
Goals from Luke Jones, Stefan Moore and Martin Brittain took Harriers through.
But a late fightback from the visitors, Pete Heler adding to Stanford's strike, made it a nervous final 20 minutes.
"It was not a good display. We won and that's about the only positive. I was disappointed with a lot of things," Yates told BBC Hereford and Worcester.
"There's a hell of a lot of improvement needed before the Christmas games.
"We know we have to be better than that, and if we don't succeed this season, it can't be for having the wrong attitude.
"We did not win enough first balls, second balls, all over the pitch and I think they thought it would be too easy.
"The opposition don't let you stroll around. We have to look at that and do better.
"Fair play, they had a go at us. They competed, but it was our own downfall. We were sloppy with some of our passes, and we didn't play with our usual tempo.
Kidderminster now travel to Ilkeston Town in the second round on 10 January.
Kidderminster Harriers are at Crawley in the Blue Square Premier on Saturday (1500 GMT). There will be full commentary on the game online at bbc.co.uk/herefordandworcester.
