Ipswich Town fans' jeers disrespectful, says Edwards

Edwards featured in the home defeats by Barnsley and Derby

Carlos Edwards has branded Ipswich Town supporters' jeers in last week's defeat by Barnsley as "disrespectful".

The 3-1 reverse caused some supporters to boo their side and even cheer some of the Tykes' passing moves.

The midfielder, 32, told BBC Radio Suffolk: "I've had fans boo me before, but I've never had fans from my team join in with the away fans.

"I thought it was disrespectful in a way. I don't think they helped us in the second half in any way possible."

It was Town's second consecutive home defeat, after the 2-0 loss to Derby County the week before.

The so called Ipswich fans cheering on the opposition its disgusting and pathetic, no wonder we cannot attract any players to our club with home support like that.

And Edwards, who has played in the Premier League for Sunderland and in the World Cup with Trinidad & Tobago, has found the fans' response difficult to come to terms with.

"They didn't play their part, it's all well and good to boo but it's a kick in the teeth joining in with the away fans," he added.

"It's a bit despondent and discouraging.

"We didn't deliberately go out there to concede three goals, it happens and the fans do play an integral part in our push to get promoted this season.

"Everyone has a right to give their opinions but to join in with the away fans it's not acceptable."

On-loan Sunderland youngster Jack Colback stopped short of Edwards' criticism of the Town faithful.

But the 21-year-old midfielder admitted it was a demoralising experience: "I was obviously disappointed the way a minority of them cheered when the ball is getting passed around by Barnsley - it kind of deflates you.

"The fans have always been good since I've been here, it's just something you've got to take as a footballer.

"When things are going well, the fans are really upbeat and they do keep you going if you're struggling a little bit.

"But you've just got to take the highs and the lows."

Despite the supporter unrest Ipswich are just two points off a play-off place in the Championship and are through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
