Ipswich have completed a deal for Dutch defender Pim Balkestein from Heerenveen for an undisclosed fee.
The 21-year-old has signed a two-year deal at Portman Road with the option of a further year.
Balkestein spent some time at Ipswich on trial last season and impressed in a reserve friendly against Tottenham.
Town boss Jim Magilton told the club's website: "He is 6ft 3in, he is an organiser and he is someone who is desperate for an opportunity."
Magilton added: "He showed a determination to play and his all round attitude and ability impressed me.
"I think he has all the right ingredients to have a bright future at this club."
Meanwhile, Ipswich have appointed Simon Hunt as head of international scouting and recruitment.
