Hull priced out of Riise market

John-Arne Riise
Riise played for Liverpool from 2001 until June 2008

Hull City manager Phil Brown has ruled out a move for former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise before the January transfer window closes.

Brown confirmed he did contact the Norwegian's club AS Roma about a move to the KC Stadium, but could not match the Italian side's valuation.

He told BBC Radio Humberside: "We came away from the enquiries with a 'too expensive for us' tag."

Hull will now turn their sights to two other unnamed targets.

Brown wants to bring in at least one more defender before the transfer window closes to augment his squad.

He added: "When we enquired about John Arne Riise we didn't know what the extent Andy's [Dawson] long-term or Anthony Gardner's long-term injury was going to be."

Dawson made his return in the Tigers' 2-0 FA Cup fourth round victory over Millwall at the KC Stadium on Saturday after being sidelined since November with Achilles tendon problems.

Former Spurs defender Gardner is expected to step up his training this week after being out since September with a thigh injury.
