Ritchie won 22 of his 51 matches in charge of the Terriers
Huddersfield Town manager Andy Ritchie has left the club by mutual consent.
Ritchie was only appointed boss at the Galpharm Stadium last April and leaves the club sitting 14th in League One.
Chairman Ken Davy said: "The reality is that, despite an increased spend and new signings, we have not progressed as we hoped this season."
Director of football development Gerry Murphy has been put in caretaker charge and the club hope to appoint a new manager before the end of the season.
Davy added: "Andy Ritchie is as nice a person as you could meet and we wish him every success in the future.
"Going forward, however, our focus at Huddersfield Town now has to be appointing a new manager for our centenary season."
Murphy spent a month as caretaker manager towards the end of last season, between the sacking of Peter Jackson and the appointment of Ritchie in April 2007.
