Andrew Driver has undergone successful knee surgery in Sweden but will miss Hearts' pre-season trip to Italy.
The 22-year-old winger has returned to Scotland after this week's operation, designed to end the tendonitis that blighted his season last term.
Assistant manager Billy Brown told the club website: "The operation was a success and the surgeon was quite happy with the way everything went.
"He will stay here in Edinburgh and work on his rehabilitation."
Manager Jim Jefferies will take around 25 players to his favoured Tuscan resort of Il Ciocco next Saturday for a seven-day stay.
But Driver will now start his recovery programme under the supervision of the club's medical staff.
"Andrew will now get on with his rehab and that means he won't be in Italy with the rest of the players," added Brown.
"He's a generally fit boy and he'll be working hard to get back for the start of the season."
The Scottish Premier League club on Tuesday rejected an improved transfer bid from Burnley for Driver.
Hearts are holding out for a guaranteed £3.5m after the Championship outfit offered £2.5m, potentially rising to £4m.
