Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo has hit out at Marius Zaliukas after the defender's third sending-off of the season resulted in a four-match ban.
The Lithuanian was dismissed during Hearts' 1-0 Scottish Cup exit after a clash with Falkirk's Carl Finnigan.
"I am very angry and disappointed with him, and definitely the player must think about his attitude," Laszlo told the club website.
"I can't understand that a player has three red cards in half a season."
Zaliukas will serve an automatic one-match ban next week against Aberdeen.
But, as it was his third red card, he also misses the league games against St Mirren, Dundee United and Motherwell.
"This is not okay," added Laszlo. "He may be young but he has international experience and has played a lot of games in the Scottish Premier League.
"He must have a different attitude. You can lose games - but you can't do what he did.
"We have spoken internally about this.
"I have never had a player in my career who has had so many red cards - and I don't want to see anyone in my team do this in the future.
"If you don't have self-discipline then nobody can help you."
Hearts have already been weakened in central defence, following the January sale of skipper Christophe Berra to Wolves.
Zaliukas will be free to return for the Edinburgh derby match against Hibernian at Easter Road on 14 March.
Until then, Christos Karipidis and Eggert Jonsson, who have both been used to good effect in midfield this season, are likely to fill in at the back.
Hearts were recently fined 10,000 after failure to improve their disciplinary record from last season.
