Hearts pay Arbroath Webster cash

Hearts have finally paid Arbroath approximately 15,000 from the transfer of defender Andy Webster.

The Red Lichties sold Webster to Hearts in 2001 and claimed compensation after his move to Wigan five years later triggered a sell-on clause.

The Second Division club have been chasing the money for some time and asked the Scottish FA to assist them.

Webster, now with Rangers, will be back at Gayfield on Friday as the Ibrox side send a reserve team for a friendly.

The 26-year-old's time at Rangers has been blighted by injury and he suffered further frustration during a loan spell with Bristol City in the first half of the season, which saw him play just a handful of games.

The centre-half, capped 22 times by Scotland, came through a reserve match against Morton earlier in the week and Rangers manager Walter Smith is hoping the player can put his fitness problems behind him.

He is looking fit now, he has lost a lot of weight and he is as fit as he has been in the time that I've been here as manager

"He is in good shape physically now, he has got himself fit," said Smith.

"He has had a run of injuries, at Bristol as well, so hopefully we can get him a run of games that will get him kick-started again. That's what he is needing more than anything else.

"He's had just over two years of, initially, contractual problems and then injuries that have brought his career to a standstill.

"He is looking fit now, he has lost a lot of weight and he is as fit as he has been in the time that I've been here as manager.

"All he needs now is to get a good number of games under his belt and hopefully we can do that within the next few weeks."

Having threatened action to freeze Hearts' gate receipts in December, Arbroath agreed to a deferred payment for the 14,437 owed them plus VAT with interest.

That interest, which amounts to around 450 has not been included and the Gayfield club say they will raise the matter again with the SFA if the money is not forthcoming.
