Wilson happy to seal Sweeney deal

Antony Sweeney
Sweeney has been a consistent performer for Pools this season

Hartlepool United manager Danny Wilson has expressed his delight after midfielder Antony Sweeney signed a new contract at Victoria Park.

Midfielder Sweeney, 24, has been linked with rumours surrounding a summer departure but Wilson was adamant he would pledge his future to the club.

"We knew Tony had his heart on staying here," he told BBC Tees.

"We knew we were close and that people saying he was going in the summer don't know what they're talking about."

Meanwhile, Wilson has also assured fans there will be no let up in their performances despite the club all but securing their place in League One next season.

I would like to think I've put a team out that will try to win the game

Hartlepool boss Danny Wilson

"We've got to play for as many points as we can get," he said.

"We have a responsibility to the teams above us. We've got important fixtures coming up with the likes of [Nottingham] Forest chasing a play-off place.

"I would like to think I've put a team out that will try to win the game and not just fulfil a fixture."
