Gretna chase new stadium dream
Gretna owner Brooks Mileson
Gretna owner Brooks Mileson would like a new club home
First Division leaders Gretna may scrap plans to redevelop Raydale Park and build a new stadium.

Club owner Brooks Mileson is to meet the Scottish Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson to discuss the possible development of a new home in the area.

Gretna are nine points clear at the top of the league but Raydale Park does not meet Premier League regulations.

If they go on to win promotion, Gretna are likely to agree a ground share at Motherwell's Fir Park.

Chief executive Graeme Muir told BBC Sport: "We have planning permission to develop Raydale Park to a 6,000-seater stadium.

"And we have already started that work, having spent 200,000. But it's not ideal.

"It doesn't give us the chance to build training facilities next to the ground.

I am impressed by Gretna's enthusiasm in their community initiatives and I am also interested to learn more of their plans for a new community integrated sports stadium

"We cannot provide facilities for the wider community and we are a club proud of our strong community links."

The club maintain that the physical constraints of the Raydale Park site mean the existing stadium can only be developed properly at either end.

Ms Ferguson, who will meet Gretna representatives on Tuesday, told the club website: "Football clubs like Gretna have an important, inspirational role to play in the communities in which they are based, which extends far beyond sport.

"I am impressed by Gretna's enthusiasm in their community initiatives and I am also interested to learn more of their plans for a new community integrated sports stadium."

In the short-term, if the First Division leaders gain promotion to the Scottish Premier League, they are likely to apply to share Fir Park with Motherwell for season 2007-2008.

The SPL say they expect to receive an application from Gretna by 31 March.

However, the SPL say it is not a requirement that they have their own stadium plans in place for the following season.

The only condition is that whatever stadium Gretna propose to play their home games at must comply with SPL criteria.
