Grays Athletic manager Tim O'Shea thanked his players for calming his nerves during his first game in charge.
The Blues secured only their third win of their Blue Square Premier season by defeating Wrexham on Saturday.
A relieved O'Shea told BBC Essex: "It is nervy and if you ever wanted five minutes to go quickly, it was the last five minutes we had.
"But let's not get carried away, it's only one game, but questions were asked and questions were answered."
He continued: "The boys deserve full credit. They'd calmed my nerves after 10 minutes and were doing everything I'd asked."
Following a trying week for the club, which saw chairman Mike Woodward step down as manager, O'Shea was pleased with the way his players responded.
"What I and the management team want is honesty," he said.
"We want the boys to back one another, we want the boys to go out and give a performance that they can be proud of and that the person sitting next to them in the changing room can be proud of."
The win moved Grays up to 19th in the Blue Square Premier table.
