Gillingham's Danny Spiller could lose broken finger

Gillingham midfielder Danny Spiller has been told he could lose his finger after breaking it during a match.

The 29-year-old thought he had dislocated it during Tuesday's game with Chesterfield.

But manager Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: "He has a real bad break and he's going to need surgery on it.

"People might say it shouldn't stop him playing but if he has the operation and comes back too soon then he could actually lose the finger."

Hessenthaler added: "That's as bad as it could be.

"Also long term he could get arthritis.

"So I think the consultant is worried that if he came back too early and damages it again then there could be implications for that.

"He may have to have a rod in the finger as well because it's quite a bad break.

"He's obviously disappointed, but we'll have to see what the consultant says after he has surgery this week."
