Gillingham sign former Blackpool youngster Joe Martin

Gillingham have signed former Blackpool and Tottenham utility man Joe Martin on non-contract terms after a successful trial with the club.

The 22-year-old, who also plays in midfield and at left-back, has been with the Gills for the last fortnight.

He was released by Blackpool following their promotion to the Premier League and has been without a club since.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: "He's a good size, strong in the air and a comfortable footballer."

He added: "If he does well over Christmas we can make it into a permanent deal."

The son of Alvin Martin, he played youth football for West Ham and Tottenham before moving to Blackpool in 2008 where he made 25 appearances.

Joe likes to get on the football, and has certainly got a nice left foot.

"If he takes after his Dad we've got a fantastic defender there, because he was a fantastic player," said Hessenthaler.

"He's not as big as his Dad, he's a bit more cultured than his Dad, I'm sorry if Alvin's listening to this.

"Alvin was a proper centre-half who would head it, tackle and put his body on the line. Joe likes to get on the football, and has certainly got a nice left foot."

The Gills needed cover at full-back as Callum Kennedy has now returned to Swindon Town following his loan spell.

Martin has not played for anyone else this season so Hessenthaler can sign him outside the transfer window.
