Nicky Southall may follow Hessenthaler to Gillingham

Southall has already had three spells at the Gills as a player

Former Gillingham midfielder Nicky Southall could follow former manager Andy Hessenthaler out of the door at Dover Athletic and back to Priestfield.

New Dover boss Martin Hayes says he is waiting to hear whether Southall, his assistant at Crabble, will move.

Hayes told BBC Radio Kent: "I'm not sure what Nicky's plans are. I believe there's an offer for him to go back to Gillingham, which might appeal to him.

"I wouldn't stand in his way. I don't want anyone here who's not committed."

Dover have already lost three members of staff to Gillingham this summer. Manager Hessenthaler is now the Gills boss; the man who was named to replace him, Ian Hendon, is now assistant at Priestfield; and academy coach Darren Hare followed the pair.

Gillingham have cancelled their proposed friendly with Dover on 24 July.

"It's probably for the best. There are a lot of things that have been said and done over the past month, which people aren't happy about," added Hayes.

Gillingham have announced a new pre-season fixture to replace the game. They will now travel to Blue Square Bet South side Bishop's Stortford on 23 July.
