Tony Pulis backs Andy Hessenthaler at Gillingham

Former Gillingham manager Tony Pulis believes that the decision to give Andy Hessenthaler a second spell as manager at Priestfield is the right one.

Stoke City boss Pulis, in charge at Priestfield from 1995 to 1999, thinks Hessenthaler's long association with the Kent club will reap rewards.

"Hessy will know it better than anyone else," Pulis told BBC Radio Kent.

"He just needs a little bit of luck in bringing in a couple of players who can make the difference."

Pulis, who signed Hessenthaler for the Gills from Watford in August 1996, added: "I'm sure it will be a popular decision with the supporters.

"Obviously it's disappointing that they've dropped down a level but they'll be looking to get promoted again next year.

"I've got great affection for the football club.

"The last year was very difficult because of everything that went on between me and the chairman but it's a great football club and I had a great four years there."
