Stimson hopes for FA Cup windfall

Gillingham boss Mark Stimson
Stimson's side will play Burton in the FA Cup second round

Gillingham boss Mark Stimson hopes an FA Cup run will allow him to sign new players for the League One club.

The Gills face Burton in the second round of the competition, with victory possibly landing them a lucrative tie against a Premier League team.

Last season, Stimson's side drew Aston Villa in a game shown live on TV.

"You've got a better chance of asking the chairman to release some money if you're winning games," Stimson told BBC Radio Kent.

"If we can manage to get through and pull a big side out, it's massive on the money side. The prize money can be used for loan signings.

"Winning these matches can only help us get some more players in."

If the Gills win their second-round tie against Burton, they will receive £27,000 in prize money.

The Burton tie marks the eighth cup draw running that Gillingham have been drawn at home, including two ties in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and two ties in the Carling cup.

Stimson added: "The draw could have been worse, I can't complain. I know Burton from my non-league days and they are a decent side.

"It's far from easy. Staines at home would have been an easier draw. You might say it's a potential shock but I'd rather play a Staines than a Burton.

"We could have got a Norwich or Southampton, but we are pleased with the draw."
