Smith led St Mirren and Aberdeen to Scottish Cup final triumphs
Falkirk assistant Alex Smith will assume a hands-on role to help rookie manager Eddie May through the club's poor start to the season.
Smith was appointed in the summer to oversee May and Steven Pressley, but the club has yet to earn a league win.
The Bairns are now four points adrift at the foot of the table and Smith said he want to help improve the situation.
"We need to share the load in a way that is in the best interests of the football club," said Smith.
The 69-year-old had been the one put forward to make after-match comments to the media, including BBC Radio Scotland, after Saturday's 3-1 defeat away to St Johnstone.
And Smith, who won the Scottish Cup in 1987 as manager of St Mirren and in 1990 while in charge at Aberdeen, believes his experience can help Falkirk out of their current slump.
We have to do it in a way where they can get as much knowledge and information as quickly as possible. When it's hot during the game, that's when it's most needed

"For most of the season up until last week, I've been in the stand and we felt before last week's game we would work together and bounce things off each other in the dugout rather than anywhere else," added Smith.
"Every single person involved in the club has to pull together - but mainly the players and the management.
"We're a new management team, with two very young, promising managers wanting to learn the game.
"We have to do it in a way where they can get as much knowledge and information as quickly as possible. When it's hot during the game, that's when it's most needed."
Saturday's defeat at McDiarmid Park was May's eighth in 13 matches this season, seven of those in the Scottish Premier League.
Falkirk had worked their way back into the game with Carl Finnigan's equaliser following Collin Samuel's opener but conceded two goals in the space of three minutes in the second half.
